And finally, in 1961, the name was changed to Oregon State University. The reason for all these name changes is that the mission of the school has changed over time. When it first started out, it was focused on agriculture and engineering.

But as time went on and it grew into a more comprehensive university, offering a wide variety of programs, the name needed to reflect that change. So now you know why OSU’s name has changed several times over the years!

The biggest rival for Ohio State is Michigan. The two teams have been competing against each other in football since 1897, and the rivalry is considered one of the greatest in all of sports. The winner of the annual Ohio State-Michigan game receives the coveted “Gold Pants” trophy, which is a replica of a pair of gold pants worn by former Ohio State coach Woody Hayes.

The greatest Ohio State football player of all time is undoubtedly Archie Griffin. He is the only two-time Heisman Trophy winner in college football history, and his accomplishments while wearing the Scarlet and Gray are truly legendary. Griffin first burst onto the scene as a freshman in 1972, rushed for over 1,000 yards, and helped lead the Buckeyes to an undefeated season and a national championship.

He was just getting started, however. Over the next three years Griffin would rack up an incredible 5,589 rushing yards – an average of over 1,800 per season – and score 40 touchdowns. His senior year was his best yet, as he ran for 2,679 yards (an NCAA record at the time) and scored 22 TDs en route to winning his second Heisman Trophy.

In total, Griffin finished his collegiate career with 713 points (second most in Ohio State history), 558 rushes for 3598 yards (both school records), and 26 100-yard rushing games (also a school record). He was a four-time All-American and remains one of the most popular Buckeyes ever. Simply put, Archie Griffin is the greatest Ohio State football player of all time.
